Writing a Book and Getting It Published

My first piece of advice is to get that book written! How long have you been carrying this idea around your head and heart? You keep putting off writing it.

Do you want to create a novel, a memoir, a mystery, a fantasy, or something else entirely? Just sit down and start typing away at whatever you want to put on paper; don’t worry about grammar, spelling, or anything else when you’re in the flow of writing. If you’ve always wanted to write a book, now is the time to put pen to paper and finish the project once and for all. If nothing else, you can say, “At least I tried to write a book,” and who knows? Maybe you’ll end up writing a book and become an overnight sensation. If not, then at least you can say you tried!

The first step is to decide whether to write it yourself or employ a professional writer.

One, Do It All Yourself and Write the Book:

Notes! Take notes wherever you go; always have a notebook with you. Write wherever you can get some peace—a guest room, an office, a sunroom, a moving vehicle, a railway car, a bus stop, or a garden shed! Anywhere you won’t be disturbed by people you care about, whether they be family, friends, or children. This is because inspiration can strike at any time, and it’s essential to have a distraction-free environment in which to write it down. Have a notebook handy when reading a fantastic book so that you may write down any insights you gain from it.

Every week, give yourself at least two hours to write. Every Monday and Friday, tell yourself, “I’ll write; the kids are in school, perfect!” I’ll put pen to paper every Monday from 10 am to 12 pm. I’m going to settle in and become severe. If you try that and find it doesn’t help you now, that’s cool, too. You should make time to write because it will bring you joy and is suitable for your health and stress levels. Whatever works, works. If it doesn’t work this time, don’t fret; you’ll have plenty of other opportunities.

Some people try to carve out time to write, but their hectic schedules make it impossible for them to do so. I know some authors who go away on retreats for as long as five days, during which time they do nothing but sit down and write. However, for others, setting out two hours a week in a quiet place is all they need. Their phone will remain safely at home, and they will take their computer with them without internet access. Finally, the end! They don’t do anything but sit and write.

Some people, I’ve heard, can write an entire book in just five days. They just sat in front of the computer and typed away until their book was finished. It’s entirely up to you to decide how to proceed. The work is one-time, but the payoff could last a lifetime, so it’s essential to get it right. Examine the effectiveness of each approach by trying them both.

Consistently devoting two hours a day to writing is optimal for most people.

A book can be written even if you can’t write. If you want to dictate your text or thoughts into the computer, you can use software like Dragon Naturally Speaking, which requires only a microphone and a laptop. After you’ve written down your thoughts in response to these prompts, you can edit your book on a computer, which is much simpler if you already have a body of work to work from.

Sometimes you can get sixty or seventy percent done in two hours, depending on how fast you talk, but it may take a few days to get eighty percent done, and that’s still really good! For people who aren’t comfortable putting their thoughts to paper, speech recognition software like Dragon Naturally Speaking is an excellent option for creating a book. However, it could be slow, or they can have trouble expressing their ideas quickly enough.

I want to add another: many individuals respond with an “Oh!” Do I have a book’s worth of material on my computer? It isn’t straightforward since they could contain 10,000 words, 15,000 words, or 100,000 words. It’s up to the individual author to decide how lengthy or short their novel should be, as there is no universal standard for fiction. You’ll have to figure out the length of your book on your own, but if you’re writing nonfiction, aim for at least 150 pages. I bring this up because you never know who could wonder, “I have this many words; have I got a book?” or “How do I know when I have enough information to publish my book?” I think 40,000 words is a good number to shoot for. It’s an excellent length at 40k words.
