In honor of an old-fashioned New England tradition, the Portland Sea Dogs will rebrand for one game this season as the Maine Clambakes and offer themed merchandise such as hats and T-shirts bearing that moniker.

T-shirts featuring Jake the Sea Dog in a sou’wester hat are among the most beloved designs, while others show Salty wearing seasonal or themed headgear.

Bill Sparks, owner of Sea Dog, noticed in the early 1980s that graphic tee shirts worn by visitors to Florida were uninspired and ordinary. To bring more life and personality into resort clothing, he used his artistic talent to design bolder, more original images to emblazon resort clothing, thus creating his successful line of upscale casual apparel called Sea Dog.

Bill Fremon and Bob Fremon first printed all their images onto white t-shirts using only premium cotton such as Pima or Supima with long fibers to ensure soft fabric; also used was slub cotton, with its slight bumps and lumps for an eye-catching textured appearance.

Bob, Bill’s father-in-law, decided to add the Sea Dog logo to all their tee shirts to make it easier for customers to recognize and identify their merchandise. Over time, this simple symbol made a noticeable, impactful difference in their business.

Sweatshirts

Sweatshirts are long-sleeved pullover shirts constructed of thick fabric. They may feature a buttonless and zipper-free design or be fitted with a hood, which is known as a hoodie. Sweatshirts can make for an excellent addition in colder climates; their buttonless methods enable for convenient buttonless or zipperless wear while they wick away moisture to keep you feeling cozy and stylish while remaining functional during physical activities such as sports or cardio workouts.

Sweatshirts are typically constructed of heavy cotton jersey material and may come unadorned or with stripes and patterns on them. Sweatshirts first gained widespread acceptance as casual wear during the 1950s due to their association with rebellious youth culture; James Dean frequently donned one, and it quickly spread among teens.

Hoodies

Hoodies were first worn to stay warm at cold storage facilities in New York in the 1930s before becoming widespread among lumber and warehouse workers and, eventually, rugby girlfriends and musicians. Hoodies resemble sweatshirts in appearance but feature large front pockets and hoods, making them comfortable enough to wear during sports like jogging.

Bill Sparks was born in Portage Lakes, Ohio, in 1953. While attending school due to an undisclosed learning disability–then known as dyslexia–he discovered his passion for drawing as an outlet. Through drawing, unique and humorous designs came flowing out, adorning resort clothing emblazoned with Sparks’ images emblazons. Sparks later established his business by purchasing screen printing equipment in 1983.

Now available in many sporting goods stores and tourist spots worldwide, Sea Dog apparel can be found both online and at physical retail outlets.
