Mizuno JPX 923 Tour Iron Review

Mizuno forged irons have long been favored by players on tour. Their latest JPX 923 Tour continues this legacy by featuring compact shapes and workability demanded by skilled ball strikers.

This player’s iron provides ample forgiveness, thanks to its Stability Frame design.

Forged Carbon Steel

Mizuno’s JPX 923 Tour irons are designed with shot-shaping golfers in mind, offering feel and control when shot-shaping. With minimal offset, thin topline, narrow sole, weight distributed around the perimeter for added stability, and soft copper underlay for increased feel and sound at impact, they deliver solid contact even with off-center shots.

The JPX 923 Tour Club is constructed from premium materials, such as 1025E pure select mild carbon steel. This high-grade material provides a smooth feel with every swing and exceptional performance, as well as being engineered with a neutral shot bias to promote penetrating ball flight for consistent distance and accuracy. In addition, its sleek, compact design with a satin chrome finish gives this club its professional appearance.

Mizuno’s JPX iron lineup provides models suitable for golfers of varying skill levels. The 923 Tour model stands out in this regard by offering more workability than other models in their line-up and smaller blade lengths than other Mizuno forged irons, thus making them more accessible for shorter arm players. Furthermore, these irons also feature a non-reflective White Satin Brush finish, which reduces glare at the address and makes sighting the club head simpler.

The Mizuno JPX 923 Tour iron is an accommodating model, but less so than others in their line. Ideally suited for skilled golfers who require precision and control, high handicappers may prefer other models in their line. Combo sets allow golfers to combine it with other forgiving Mizuno irons to fill any holes in their bag – with Mizuno offering 12 combo options online that include loft adjustments so as to narrow any distance gaps between clubs in their bag.

Copper Underlay

Mizuno irons cater to an impressively wide range of golfers with their JPX range, catering to tour pros as well as amateurs with custom fitting capabilities to provide optimal looks, feel, and workability for all golfers, from beginners to professionals.

JPX irons represent an excellent example. Created for advanced players, the forged JC 923 Forged and Tour models feature new 4335 nickel chromoly metal to increase ball speed while V-Chassis helps manage vibration for superior vibration control – all combined create game improvement irons with deep center of gravity designs and high launch rates for impressive distance performance.

Both the forged JC 923 Forged irons and Tour irons feature a forged face with a shallow cavity back to maximize forgiveness without compromising their signature Mizuno soft feel. Clubheads are handcrafted from 1025E pure select mild carbon steel at Mizuno’s facility in Hiroshima, Japan, with copper added during forging for even more incredible softness at impact; copper layers sandwiched between base nickel and outer chrome ensure a responsive feel at impact.

The JC 923 Tour iron is an ideal all-around player’s iron for skilled ball strikers looking for more precise and controlled shots. Its rounded sole and rolled trailing edge allow golfers to shape shots comfortably, while Stability Frame technology adds extra stability during off-center hits.

JC 923 Tour stands out as an exception in players’ irons by being particularly hot, long, or distance-driven compared to its counterparts, ranking first in our 2023 Best Player’s Iron test for both forgiveness and accuracy. Boasting impressive distance while providing ample chance for shaping shots due to piercing trajectories and turf interaction, its versatile face boasts an extra-wide 4.2-millimeter slot that flexes more freely, thus increasing speed and forgiveness.

V-Chassis

Last year, Mizuno made headlines when they reintroduced their muscle back blades into the market. While these irons are great for players with repeatable swings, most golfers may not find them suitable. As an alternative solution, JPX irons offer one-click more playability for most golfers, with their JPX 923 Tour being one such offering from this series of player irons, offering shapeable shots and precise control.

The Tour version of the JPX 923 is a compact player’s cavity back that features a copper underlay for an authentic Mizuno feel. Made in Hiroshima, Japan, from 1025E Pure Select mild carbon steel and designed in Hiroshima to feature narrower top lines and soles as well as more rounded trailing edges to facilitate cleaner turf interaction, it is forged in Hiroshima using traditional Japanese craftsmanship.

Like its siblings in the JPX 923 family, Tour irons employ a reinforced V-Chassis design for enhanced stability and feel. Engineers were also able to reduce the weight of the head for an appearance of thinner faces at the address; in fact, the Tour iron is narrower at the address than its counterpart Pro 221 muscle back blade and within 0.5mm of JPX 923 Hot Metal when considering blade length and sole width respectively.

As the most forgiving iron from JPX’s five new irons, the Tour is equipped with a more robust face construction to boost ball speeds on off-center hits and the Stability Frame, which creates low to mid-launch and spin rates for maximum distance and control.

Additionally, Tour irons feature a lower center of gravity than Hot Metal and Forged versions, providing more consistent and penetrating ball flights – making the Tour an excellent option for players who prioritize feel over forgiveness.

Mizuno engineers used innovative materials in the JPX 923 Tour irons to meet this engineering challenge and meet speed while maintaining a solid feel without sacrificing MOI or feel. 4-7 irons feature 4120 Chromoly to allow expansion of cavity and increase MOI without compromising sense; 8-GWs feature 1025E mild carbon steel, which delivers a strong and stable feel while still producing fast ball speeds.

Harmonic Impact Technology

JPX 923 Tour irons employ Harmonic Impact Technology similar to that found on Pro irons for an enjoyable hitting experience. This allows players to have greater control of their shot shape during mishits, reduce impact sound levels, and provide precise feedback so golfers know exactly what was hit.

The JPX 923 Tour features a narrower sole and topline than its predecessors, making the clubs easier for better ball strikers who value feel over distance. Furthermore, their thin topline gives a more refined appearance; feedback from Mizuno tour professionals was used to create this new design.

The JPX 923 Tour irons feature a forged carbon steel construction, which delivers a soft and consistent feel at impact, thanks to their Grain Flow Forged HD process, which uses premium 1025E mild steel billet. Copper plating enhances this experience to give a very comfortable hit that helped earn them a second place for sound and feel in our subjective feedback scoring system.

Accuracy-wise, the JPX 923 Tour placed 11th overall in our testing, likely due to not possessing one of the highest launches or spin rates out of any other iron we examined. Still, skilled golfers found them reliable.

Mizuno JPX 923 Tour irons are an ideal choice for golfers who wish to upgrade their iron set. As an excellent alternative to more forgiving irons, these blade-like clubs provide better players with a traditional blade feel with modern technological advancements. There is a range of lofts, flexes, and lie angles available so that any golfer can find one suitable to their game. Custom fitting options are also provided to make sure they get the maximum benefit out of each set of Mizuno irons.
