Lilly invests in U.S.-based manufacturing.

Lilly recently announced its plans to invest an additional $1.6 billion into two new sites in Boone County, Indiana, creating up to 700 highly skilled jobs with this investment. These investments will increase Lilly’s capacity to produce active pharmaceutical ingredients and support future therapeutic modalities.

Lilly also announced a $15 million commitment to Ivy Tech Foundation, specifically to fund scholarships for students interested in pharmaceutical manufacturing careers. This announcement expands a program launched last fall, which provided up to 100 students with full-tuition scholarships and guaranteed internships at Lilly for ten years.

Lilly recently made several investment announcements. Last year, they reported a $500 million investment into Raheen Biologics Plant in Ireland; in 2020, they reported another $470 million investment into North Carolina’s Research Triangle Park. All these investments will help Lilly meet rising global demands for medicines that improve lives around the globe.

Lilly USA is committed to building a reliable domestic supply chain for its essential medications, with a particular focus on cost reduction through expanding production facilities and developing relationships with suppliers. As part of its investment in new manufacturing plants in the US, Toyota has also invested substantially in Indiana facilities since 2012. Since 2012, over $5 billion has been committed by Toyota in Indiana facilities. Lilly’s most recent investment will increase Indiana employment levels to more than 30,000, an increase that exceeds twofold from 2012. Lilly’s investment will bring with it 500 temporary construction jobs in Indiana and support hundreds of indirect positions throughout Indiana. Lilly Scholars program

Lilly Endowment Inc. created the Lilly Scholars program as a scholarship initiative designed to raise educational attainment levels in Indiana while increasing awareness of community foundations’ abilities to enhance the quality of life in their local areas. Through the Lilly Scholars initiative, Indiana students can earn certification in pharmaceutical manufacturing or quality and experience preferred access and coordinated interactions with company leaders – these opportunities are administered locally by Hendricks County Community Foundation and statewide through Independent Colleges of Indiana.

Lilly Scholars Program requires high school seniors to submit an application, which will be evaluated by a committee of two former Lilly Scholars. Each applicant will be judged based on character, academic performance, leadership experience, community involvement, and personal goals. Once selected for an interview round, top applicants are subjected to further assessments that assess communication skills, commitment, and enthusiasm toward their field of study and future goals.

Lilly Scholars will receive full tuition at Purdue, guaranteed internship or co-op opportunities with company leaders, and a stipend to cover books and equipment. This program was established to attract top academic performers capable of working with the precision and dedication required in pharmaceutical manufacturing; therefore, they must maintain at least a 3.5 unweighted GPA at graduation, as Lilly Scholars must return any portion of the allocation left over from books and equipment that remains at completion of their baccalaureate course of study.

Hendricks County Community Foundation of Indiana oversees the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program to aid low-income students in attaining a college education and thriving in pharmaceutical or quality industries, helping meet a need for qualified workers throughout Hendricks County and Indiana.

Lilly Scholars @ Ivy Tech was established to assist students seeking pharmaceutical manufacturing and quality qualifications at Ivy Tech Hendricks County, Indiana. Students will not only receive scholarships but will also have access to experiential learning and professional development opportunities through this program – which is open to any Indiana resident meeting the eligibility requirements.

Lilly’s LEAP Innovation Park expansion

Lilly announced plans to invest $1.6 billion and create 200 jobs at two new manufacturing sites within LEAP Innovation Park in Boone County. This expansion marks their most significant manufacturing investment in any one place. This investment should enable the company to meet the demand for diabetes medications and those treating other illnesses, such as autoimmune disorders. Furthermore, it will allow it to expand both active ingredient pharmaceutical capacity and device assembly capabilities. These new facilities will include a syringe fill line, an operational pharmaceutical ingredients plant, and device assembly facilities. Furthermore, the company has pledged $15 million over five years to Ivy Tech Foundation to fund scholarships for individuals interested in careers in pharmaceutical production.

Lilly plans to use its planned manufacturing sites to increase Lilly’s capacity for active ingredients used to manufacture medicine, new therapeutic modalities such as genetic medicines, and an expanded portfolio of potentially life-changing treatments for patients worldwide. As well as creating 500 full-time jobs through this project, indirect job opportunities could reach 2,000 indirect ones with suppliers supporting them.

According to a company presentation, this $2.1 billion project would comprise twelve buildings near Lebanon that currently house a water treatment plant. These range from a 3,200-square-foot visitor center to three-story, 330,000-square-foot manufacturing facilities that would need local zoning and annexation approvals for construction. The Indiana Economic Development Corp will assist the company with this endeavor as part of their plan to construct these sites by 2023.

Lilly has taken steps to expand its manufacturing footprint in the US while increasing investment in research and development programs as part of a 10-year program with Purdue University to offer students access to innovative manufacturing labs and guarantee internships or co-ops for graduates from that program. Furthermore, Lilly will give scholarships to those from low-income families or who are the first in their family to attend college.
