Across the Spider-Verse Makes More Than a Quarter Billion Dollars

Sony Pictures’ Across the Spider-Verse has already grossed more than $250 million worldwide in theaters – an enormous achievement given that production costs were only $100 million.

Contrary to most animated features, this one takes a more subdued storytelling approach. Instead of featuring numerous cameos or worlds that jump between dimensions, Miles Morales becomes the main protagonist.

It opened to $120.6 million in its first weekend.

Across the Spider-Verse has successfully outshone box office projections. The animated sequel to 2018’s critical and commercial hit Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse earned $120.6 million over its opening weekend – more than double what had been predicted, making this the biggest opening weekend of 2023 thus far. Furthermore, international audiences responded exceptionally positively, earning $88.1 million across 59 nations!

The success of Across the Spider-Verse should come as no surprise, considering its positive reception by critics and audiences alike. It earned Sony Animation much to be proud of with an outstanding opening weekend that exceeded the domestic earnings of its predecessor by more than half, becoming the second-biggest opening of 2016. It represents another triumphant success story from Sony Animation that they should take great pride in celebrating.

Across the Spider-Verse has not only broken records but has also managed to excite and mesmerize audiences. It quickly became a viral hit on social media, with thousands of memes and reactions generated, receiving praise from fans and industry insiders alike thanks to a highly successful marketing campaign and script.

There’s no denying Across the Spider-Verse has made waves at the box office this summer, thanks to its stunning visuals and top-tier acting talent. Indeed, many consider it one of the top contenders for the best summer movie.

Even though Across the Spider-Verse was competing against Rob Marshall’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, its numbers haven’t suffered. Indeed, its performance this week has been exceptional and looks set to stay at or near the top for another weekend at least.

Contrary to popular belief, Across the Spider-Verse was not an exclusively male affair. Instead, this film proved popular with both men and women audiences alike, mainly younger audiences – 93% of positive exit reviews were recorded via PostTrak; 82% recommended viewing the film in theaters where Imax and PLF formats are available (which represented 33% of its ticket sales totals).

It opened to $240 million in its second weekend.

Sony invested significant resources into producing and marketing Across the Spider-Verse, spending over $100 million. Their bet has paid off, as the movie not only far surpassed expectations at the box office but has received rave reviews from critics (Collider’s Ross Bonaime even called it one of the “best films of 2023”)! Such success in an otherwise disappointing superhero film year is hard to come by.

Across the Spider-Verse has now amassed worldwide earnings of $240 Million, nearly three times what its predecessor earned during its theatrical run. After its second weekend earnings, it became the highest-earning superhero sequel ever and the third best-animated release of 2023.

The success of Dead Reckoning Part One can be attributed to international solid box office performance, specifically in China, where it opened with over $48.6 million on opening weekend alone – more than double what North American audiences saw at first. This was no small feat given competition from films such as Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and Greta Gerwig’s forthcoming Barbie film.

Over its theatrical run, Across the Spider-Verse is on track to surpass $400 million, becoming Marvel’s fifth highest-earning movie and its biggest Spider-Man film ever. This achievement is particularly remarkable given that this animated sequel contains no live-action components and over 100 named Spider-People as characters.

As Lady Bird continues to charm audiences, its box office performance may remain strong next week. However, its hold will likely become less secure with competition from Disney’s Incredibles 2 and Greta Gerwig’s celebrated directorial debut, Lady Bird.

Across the Spider-Verse has earned strong domestic and international box office returns while captivating audiences with its beautiful soundtrack and innovative animation style. Critical acclaim has already come its way; an Oscar nomination was even received!

It opened to $405 million in its third weekend.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has crossed past $600 Million at its fifth weekend of release, becoming Sony’s highest-grossing animated film ever. While competing against films like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Transformers 5, Spider-Man thrives at box offices worldwide.

The film’s success can be attributed to its original style and story, which have earned rave reviews from audiences and critics. Furthermore, its relatively modest budget enabled more ambitious animation and storytelling than previous Spider-Man movies, thanks mainly to a talented cast and crew, which included 14-year-old YouTuber Preston Mutanga (creator of the stop-motion LEGO sequence in the film).

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is the sequel to 2018’s critically acclaimed animated feature Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and became the highest-grossing animated movie of all time. Already surpassing domestic and global box office totals set by its predecessor, it appears destined to become 2023’s most significant superhero film.

Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) and Gwen Stacy/Ghost-Spider (Hailee Steinfeld) must fight a mysterious adversary known as Spot in this action movie starring Brian Tyree Henry, Issa Rae, Luna Lauren Velez Karan Soni Daniel Kaluya Jake Johnson and Jason Schwartzman.

Sony Pictures’ hit animated film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has made them one of the most profitable studios in Hollywood. Sony’s recent successes have earned them many other high-grossing franchises, such as Descendants and Hotel Transylvania; one recent hit made them one of the highest-grossing movie studios overall.

Animated superhero films often generate more money at the box office than live-action superhero films due to their diverse target audiences and lower production costs, which helps increase profitability.

Studios must invest more in animated movies to continue producing high-quality content. Across the Spider-Verse proves studios can profit from animated features if they focus on quality and an engaging story. However, its success has inspired other companies to follow suit and face their own set of challenges.

It opened to $405 million in its fourth weekend.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse continued its impressive box office run over the weekend, earning another $19.3 million domestically to bring its total North American total up to an astounding $317.1 million and grossing $243.2 million internationally for an unprecedented global total of $5600.3 million – surpassing both Hotel Transylvania films combined and becoming the highest-earning animated comic book film ever!

Even after being overtaken at the box office by new releases like Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Justice League films this weekend, Across the Spider-Verse still managed to maintain momentum at its box office debut. This achievement speaks volumes of its popularity, showing audiences are still hungry for superhero films despite what some pundits claim about “superhero fatigue.”

Across the Spider-Verse has made waves worldwide with its remarkable global take, surpassing Disney’s Avengers: Endgame as the fourth-biggest movie of 2023 and becoming one of the highest-grossing films. Within weeks, it had grossed more than $1.3 billion worldwide and could surpass that amount soon.

Sony Pictures’ success with The Take has also been enhanced by its international success; an impressive portion of earnings come from overseas markets. China, in particular, has proven particularly fruitful; to date, it has amassed over $28 million, and the United Kingdom and Mexico boast over $20 million earned, respectively.

Though most blockbuster movies experienced significant drops during their second weekend, Across the Spider-Verse experienced only a 54% decline – much better than many had expected! That performance put it well ahead of previous record holder Sony Pictures Animation’s Hotel Transylvania 2, which experienced a 55% decrease.

Across the Spider-Verse is an exciting and ambitious journey that will delight fans of all ages. Starring Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Brian Tyree Henry, Danai Gurira, Issa Rae Karan Soni, and Daniel Kaluya as characters from Spider-Verse franchise history, including numerous references from recent live-action Marvel films (e.g., Loki in “Thor”). Also features many fun Easter eggs from longstanding series such as Thor: Raging through Time (references made throughout the film series’ history), including several references made directly at these films by Marvel themselves (like these!).
