Across the Spider-Verse Makes More Than a Quarter Billion Dollars

Sony Pictures’ Across the Spider-Verse has already grossed more than $250 million worldwide in theaters – an enormous achievement given that production costs were only $100 million.

Contrary to most animated features, this one takes a more subdued storytelling approach. Instead of featuring numerous cameos or worlds that jump between dimensions, Miles Morales becomes the main protagonist.

It opened to $120.6 million in its first weekend.

Across the Spider-Verse has successfully outshone box office projections. The animated sequel to 2018’s critical and commercial hit Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse earned $120.6 million over its opening weekend – more than double what had been predicted, making this the biggest opening weekend of 2023 thus far. Furthermore, international audiences responded exceptionally positively, earning $88.1 million across 59 nations!

The success of Across the Spider-Verse should come as no surprise, considering its positive reception by critics and audiences alike. It earned Sony Animation much to be proud of with an outstanding opening weekend that exceeded the domestic earnings of its predecessor by more than half, becoming the second-biggest opening of 2016. It represents another triumphant success story from Sony Animation that they should take great pride in celebrating.

Even though Across the Spider-Verse was competing against Rob Marshall’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, its numbers haven’t suffered. Indeed, its performance this week has been exceptional and looks set to stay at or near the top for another weekend at least.

Contrary to popular belief, Across the Spider-Verse was not an exclusively male affair. Instead, this film proved popular with both men and women audiences alike, mainly younger audiences – 93% of positive exit reviews were recorded via PostTrak; 82% recommended viewing the film in theaters where Imax and PLF formats are available (which represented 33% of its ticket sales totals).

It opened to $240 million in its second weekend.

Their bet has paid off, as the movie not only far surpassed expectations at the box office but has received rave reviews from critics (Collider’s Ross Bonaime even called it one of the “best films of 2023”)! Such success in an otherwise disappointing superhero film year is hard to come by.

Across the Spider-Verse has now amassed worldwide earnings of $240 Million, nearly three times what its predecessor earned during its theatrical run. After its second weekend earnings, it became the highest-earning superhero sequel ever and the third best-animated release of 2023.

The success of Dead Reckoning Part One can be attributed to international solid box office performance, specifically in China, where it opened with over $48.6 million on opening weekend alone – more than double what North American audiences saw at first. This was no small feat given competition from films such as Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and Greta Gerwig’s forthcoming Barbie film.

Over its theatrical run, Across the Spider-Verse is on track to surpass $400 million, becoming Marvel’s fifth highest-earning movie and its biggest Spider-Man film ever. This achievement is particularly remarkable given that this animated sequel contains no live-action components and over 100 named Spider-People as characters.

As Lady Bird continues to charm audiences, its box office performance may remain strong next week. However, its hold will likely become less secure with competition from Disney’s Incredibles 2 and Greta Gerwig’s celebrated directorial debut, Lady Bird.

Studios must invest more in animated movies to continue producing high-quality content. However, its success has inspired other companies to follow suit and face their own set of challenges.

Sony Pictures’ success with The Take has also been enhanced by its international success; an impressive portion of earnings come from overseas markets. China, in particular, has proven particularly fruitful; to date, it has amassed over $28 million, and the United Kingdom and Mexico boast over $20 million earned, respectively.

Though most blockbuster movies experienced significant drops during their second weekend, Across the Spider-Verse experienced only a 54% decline – much better than many had expected!
